FAQ

  • What is Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)?
Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) is a combat system that focuses on weapons and empty-hand techniques, including sticks, knives, and swords. The terms Arnis, Kali, and Eskrima refer to regional variations of FMA, each with its own history and emphasis. Arnis is often associated with the northern regions of the Philippines and focuses on stick fighting. Kali originates from the southern Philippines and is known for its weaponry, particularly the use of blades. Eskrima is commonly used in the central Philippines, emphasizing both weapon and hand-to-hand combat, with a focus on practical, adaptable techniques. While the terms differ, they all refer to the same core martial art, which is known for its adaptability and effectiveness in self-defense. At Elemental5, we specialize in two major systems: Dagooc Arnis System (DAS) and Pekiti Tirsia, both of which provide students with a comprehensive approach to martial arts, blending footwork, striking, grappling, and weapons techniques.
  • What is the difference between FMA and other martial arts?
Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) is unique because it emphasizes both weapons and empty-hand techniques. Unlike many traditional martial arts that primarily focus on unarmed combat, FMA teaches students how to defend themselves using everyday objects, such as sticks or knives, and also includes unarmed fighting. The adaptability of FMA is one of its strongest attributes, as it focuses on real-world situations and teaches students how to respond quickly and effectively to threats.
